Baroque, a style that appeared a long time ago
Today, the Baroque style is visible in furnishings, architecture and on paintings, woodwork and figurines. It is a type of modern art that emerged in the mid-sixteenth century. The word Baroque comes from the Portuguese term which means pearl. The style began with artists copying the works of previous craftsmen. The style has its roots in Italy, where many painters have shown their work as part of their creations for the church.
In France, there were people who took the arts much more seriously and this led to a new and more formal style of painting and furniture. It was as successful as in Italy, but it influenced other countries. In England, Sir Edwin Lutyens influenced the later evolution of British art. John Russel's romantic and erotic paintings were largely based on European themes. The Art Deco style, popular in the nineteenth century, is inspired by the Italian Renaissance and focuses on flamboyant colors and shapes. The avant-garde artistic movements of recent decades, however, have influenced the styles that followed.
The Baroque style can be classified as realistic and abstract, traditional and contemporary, or exotic and historically true. The most famous Baroque artist who lived at the time was Rembrandt. He is also the father of the modern art movement. The most famous example of his work is The Birth of a God. Rembrandt is probably best known for the Netherlands, but he produced some of his best works while based in Germany.
