Antonio Canova (born November 1, 1757 in Possagno (province of Treviso) in the Venetian state, died October 13, 1822 in Venice) is a sculptor Italian.

It was around 1804-1806 that he created Perseus holding the head of Medusa, statues which can be admired at the Pio-Clementino Museum in the Vatican.

Perseus, king of Argos, is one of the greatest heroes of Greek mythology.
