The Little Fourteen-Year-Old Dancer (also titled “Big Dressed Dancer”) is a sculpture by Edgar Degas made in wax between 1875 and 1880. The model identified is a young dancer named Marie van Goethem aged at the time of 14 years. During its exhibition in 1881 the work, presented in a glass cage, surprised by the uncompromising realism of the figure, whose treatment using the wax technique and the use of real accessories accentuated the illusion of reality. After the death of the artist, proofs based on the original were published in bronze by the founder Adrien-Aurélien Hébrard. 29 identified copies are kept in museums and private collections, the original print is at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, other prints are exhibited at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York or at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen.
