Art Deco style: an international movement born in France
Even if the termArt Deco only appeared in the 1960s, it undeniably refers to the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts held in Paris in 1925. The movement was born in the 1910s as a reaction against theArt Nouveau whose forms are considered too soft. It is then a question of turning towards simple lines with classical compositions and where the decoration is used sparingly. The full flowering of Art Deco takes place during the 1920s and it is the first style to have a truly worldwide diffusion. All forms of plastic arts are concerned.
In furniture, geometry is used for decorative purposes and, if the forms remain classic, cubism pushes for their simplification. The volumes become parallelepiped with sharp or rounded angles, cut sides. The furniture is often mounted on a base and moldings are very rare. The lines are resolutely refined but the decoration remains neat and even luxurious. The surfaces are treated with gilding, lacquer or marquetry with inlay of threads, ivory plates, mother-of-pearl or metal. Some woods are colored and maple becomes blue, red, green or gray.
Art Deco furniture: order, geometry and color
All our Art Deco furniture are made in the purest tradition. We call upon the best art companies in the world to provide you with the benefit of their extensive experience. All furniture, whether it is Art Deco desk, chairs, tables or Art Deco libraries are assembled in the old-fashioned way. They are made in Egypt by cabinetmakers with great expertise.
The products chosen are of the highest quality. The wood or marquetry elements are selected with the greatest care, which allows you to own art deco furniture of great beauty and great resistance.
If all our Art Deco furniture is new, it is made in the traditional way. For the structure, only solid woods are used, whether oak, beech or Swedish pine. The frames are most often made of oak while the molded or veneered structures are made of mahogany, rosewood, amaranth, lemonwood, etc. The natural veneers are directly imported from Europe, South America, the Caribbean, Africa or Asia. We use rosewood, walnut, elm burl, birch or maple, but also wenge or mahogany. Art Deco furniture often present contrasts between light and dark woods, between different materials and colors.
The woods are selected with great care before being dried. The shaping is done by hand, as is the assembly and decoration. The work is entirely carried out by qualified cabinetmakers who use cabinetmaking methods from the beginning of the century. The varnishing is systematically carried out with a buffer.
The Art Deco chairs and Art Deco armchairs are often inspired by the forms of the Directory or the Restoration with a great concern for comfort using deep shapes. The wood is generally not very visible and covered with leather or textile. The cozy-corner is a creation of the period. This corner sofa embedded in a wood paneling with shelves was all the rage. The Art Deco consoles and Art Deco offices generally have curved or even rounded fronts, whereas the Art Deco table is rather round, oval or rectangular but with broken angles.
