Greek statue
The Greek statues of ancient Greece are made of white marble. They usually represent men and women. The body and face are very finely detailed.
In museums in Greece, especially in Athens, you can see statues from different periods. Rarer female bronze statuettes are also on display. Archaic art, which followed the Hellenistic period, covers and represents the majority of sculptures. The Kouros are statues from this period.
There are two main types of ancient sculptures, those of men and women, often they are representations of gods and goddesses. We will present the most famous models.
Greek male sculptures
Among the statues of Greek mythology of men, some divinities are very famous. On the archaeological sites and in the museums of Greece you can discover statues made of stone, marble and bronze. They can be of giant size, or simply statuettes.
Here are the very famous Greek statues of men:
- Altas: the titan who carries the world (the celestial sphere) for eternity on his shoulders
- Zeus who is the king of the gods
- Hermes who is the messenger of the gods, the protector of travelers, merchants, thieves and herds.
Greek female sculptures
The sculptures of women are deities called goddesses in Greek mythology. Some are for example the goddesses of love, justice or hunting.
Some statues of Greek goddesses:
- Themis goddess of justice
- Athena goddess of intelligence and skill, of war strategy
- Artemis goddess of the hunt, wilderness, animals, young girls
- The Venus de Milo which is the goddess Aphrodite, found without her arms on the Greek island of Milos in 1820. It is a statue from the Hellenistic period.
