A piece of furniture that represents the Art Deco period

The Art Deco period is often equated with the Jazz Age or Art Nouveau. It was, at its most fundamental level, a movement that sought to redefine modern art as art conceived by artists who were not bound by tradition or by strict rules of form and function.

This movement began in New York and was led by artists such as Frank Stella, August Strindberg and Willem de Kooning. The aim was to formalise and celebrate the "art deco decorative arts" and the growing public interest in art forms now considered "modern". The result was the formation of one of the most enduring art movements of all time: Art Deco.

Although the style was immensely popular in Europe and America, it was particularly popular in the United States. During the 1920s, the number of Art Deco residences, houses, and museums grew rapidly in the United States and Canada. This piece of furniture in its form and era is undoubtedly the most emblematic.
